Dear Mr.
While performing an inspection in the neighborhood, 1 observed the fire department at your residence. I
asked the fire chief if my presence would be required prior to me continuing on my inspections. I was
informed that the furnace had backfired. He was concerned with the basement windows being blocked
with rigid insulation and asked me if this was a concern. I did not have a real concern with the windows,
except that a bed was in the basement without the proper means of escape.
The following items were noted as violations of the state building code;
1. Use of the basement family room as a bedroom without the proper emergency escape opening
2. Combustion air openings for the boiler room blocked by storage shelves and the air is being
drawn from the "bedroom"
3. Boiler flue pipe to close to combustibles
4. Mortar joints loose in the masonry chimney
The following corrective actions need to be performed;
1. Bed to be removed from the family room
2. Furnace to be thoroughly cleaned by a licensed contractor, submit a copy of the report to our
office
3. Chimney lining to be inspected by a licensed contractor, submit a copy of the report to our office
4. Clearances to combustibles for the flue pipe to be corrected.
An inspection will be required by our office for the above items.
