Re; 23 Bayberry Lane, Uncasville
On January 5, 2005 the Town of Montville fire inspector requested that I conduct an inspection of the
damage caused by a chimney fire at the above referenced address. During the inspection I noted the
following:
1) The wood stove in the basement is vented through an unsafe, non-code compliant chimney.
This chimney is constructed such that is utilizes the fireplace chimney as part of its length. It is
improperly connected to, the fireplace chimney at the damper allowing creosote to build-up
outside the flue, subsequently causing the fire. The fireplace firebox and unsafe chimney
connector have been removed by the Fire Department in their effort to put out the fire. Before
the fireplace chimney can be reused the fireplace firebox and smoke chamber must be repaired
and the chimney must be inspected, and deemed safe, by a licensed chimney professional, and a
written report of said inspection must be presented to the Building Department.
2) The furnace flue constructed in the same chimney enclosure as the fireplace flue is cracked in
the area of the fireplace firebox. Because this crack will allow chimney gases to be vented
directly into the structure I have ordered the furnace secured until the entire length of the
furnace flue piping is inspected by a licensed chimney professional and repaired to make it safe.
A written report of this inspection must be presented to the Building Department.
3) The fire damages electrical wiring passing through the area above the fireplace lintel. I have
order the breaker for the circuit controlling the wiring to be secured and the circuit cannot be
re-energized until the unsafe wiring is removed from the circuit. When this wiring is replaced,
it cannot pass through the area above the fireplace lintel.
Please be advised that permits are required for all the necessary repairs. If you have any questions you may
contact me at the Town of Montville Building Department during regular working hours.
