RE: Derry Hill Road
Western End From Route 32
CLA-5513L
Dear Don:
As requested we have reviewed the conditions at the west end of Derry Hill Road
between its intersections with Route 32 and Platoz Drive. The roadway within this 560 foot long
segment is narrow and steep with a tight curve near the top of the hill. The 12 foot wide
pavement, especially at the upper curve is so far out of standard that it is considered dangerous
for two way traffic.
Upon reviewing the conditions we find that:
a. The entrance from Rt. 32 to Derry Hill Road is narrow, confined and impractical to
widen.
b. The entrance from Rt. 32 to Platoz Drive is better and safer.
c. The exit to Rt. 32 from Deny Hill Road is acceptable with good sightlines in both
directions with a relatively level area on Derry Hill Road.
d. There are five single family residences directly affected by eliminating two way
traffic. And a business with its main access on Rt. 32 has a driveway to Derry Hill
Road.
e. If one-way west (downhill) is allowed on this section of Derry Hill Road, then to go
north on the easterly section of Derry Hill Road requires right turns only to and onto
Platoz Drive, which is 575 feet north of Derry Hill Road.
f. If one-way east (uphill) is allowed on Derry Hill then a vehicle going west on Derry
Hill Road must use Platoz Drive and cross Rt. 32 twice to access the westerly section
of Derry Hill Road.
Given the above, it is recommended that the westerly section of Derry Hill Road become
one way only from Platoz Drive down the hill to Route 32. Coordination with the residents, CT
DOT and all Town Departments is needed to effect this change.
Very truly yours,
rTummings, P.E.
