LaPrise Logging plans to conduct a selective timber harvest on the property of Madison Holdmeyer at 1039 Route 163 in Oakdale. The harvest will cover approximately 24 of the 43.87 acres encompassing the Northern portion of the property and should take approximately one month of good working weather to complete. The boundary lines have been identified with pink flagging and the Forestry Prescription as marked in the field is an Irregular Shelterwood treatment. The objective of this practice is to create gaps in the forest canopy while strategically retaining a cohort of seed trees consisting of the desired species composition for the site in an effort to create conditions favorable to a flush of natural regeneration. The desired species for this site are Red, Black and White Oak, Yellow- Poplar and Sugar Maple. There will be no trees harvested from within the wetland areas and canopy closure will be retained along the intermittent drainages. The harvest will be conducted as a cut-to- length operation where the designated trees to be removed will be felled and processed into log lengths and the non-merchantable woody debris will be slashed down to within three feet of the forest floor with a Feller Buncher and Harvester then carried out of the woodlot to the landing area with an 8 wheeled Forwarder. From the landing the logs will leave the property via a log truck utilizing the existing driveway to Route 163. The main skid trail is an existing woods road created from Forestry and Agriculture practices of years past and involves two intermittent drainage crossings as shown on the Timber Harvest Map. The crossings will be stabilized with portable timber bridge mats and the approaches will be stabilized with corduroy as needed. Corduroy is an industry standard BMP involving laying small diameter 12-16’ logs and brush perpendicular to the trail to distribute the weight of the machinery preventing compaction, rutting and subsequent erosion concerns in sensitive areas. Upon completion the drainage crossing will be removed. All Best Management Practices as adopted by the CTDEEP regarding timber harvesting shall be strictly adhered to.
