Mattern, L.S. DGT Associates 148 Route 2 Preston, CT 06365 Re: Darling Property 0 Ridge Hill Road Montville, Connecticut Dear Ms. Mattern: On June 1, 2022, I evaluated the wetlands at 0 Ridge Hill Road in the Town of Montville, Connecticut. I previously delineated the wetland boundary on the land. The wetland on the land is wooded. The tree species in the wetland is Red Maple and Black Birch. The sapling and shrub species include Ironwood, Highbush Blueberry, Maple Leaf Viburnum, Spicebush, Japanese Barberry, and Multiflora Rose. The herbaceous plants in the wetland include New York Fern, Christmas Fern, Cinnamon Fern, Sensitive Fern, Jack-in-the Pulpit, White Wood Aster, and Greenbriar. The vine species include Fox Grape, Asiatic Bittersweet, and Virgina Creeper. The soil type in the wetland is Leicester, extremely stony. The topsoil and subsoil has a fine sandy loam texture. The substratum (unweathered glacial till) has a gravelly sandy loam texture. Surface stones and boulders are abundant in the wetland. There is no intermittent watercourse present in the wetland. The wetland is formed by seasonal groundwater discharge. The wetland has a low function and value for groundwater recharge, flood storage, and pollutant renovation. The wetland has a moderate value for sediment trapping due to the abundance of surface stones and boulders. The wildlife habitat value is low. The wetland is not a wildlife corridor. The wetland begins 45 feet north of the subject land. The wetland does not provide habitat for wetland dependent animal species. The proposal is to construct a 12-foot wide gravel driveway through the wetlands. The applicant proposes to construct an outbuilding/barn/shop on the western portion of the parcel. 2,740 ft2 of wetlands is proposed to be filled. The driveway is proposed in the narrowest section of the wetland. The vegetation in the wetland proposed to be filled is dominated by Japanese Barberry, which is an exotic invasive plant. New York Fern, White Wood Aster, Ms. Susan F. Mattern, L.S. DGT Associates Re: Darling Property 0 Ridge Hill Road Montville, Connecticut June 7, 2022 Page 2 Christmas Fern, Greenbriar, and Ironwood also occur in the wetland area proposed to be filled. The Greenbriar, White Wood Aster, Christmas Fern, and Ironwood are upland plant species. I believe the filling of 2,740 ft2 of wetlands will not have a significant impact on the function and value of the wetlands. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.
