I have attached a list for both parcels. The Oakdale Rod & Gun Club plans to conduct a timber harvest which will generate habitat more suitable for wildlife. It has been a number of years since the last harvest. The area chosen has a large variety of species. Since oak trees are mast producers and this area has very few oaks, I plan to remove some of the ash, hickory, birch, beech, soft maple and tulip trees. The harvest is not a diameter cut. Trees to be removed are chosen by health, spacing and potential for regeneration. In some areas brush piles will be produced from six or eight tops put together. There are no clear cut areas but under specific oak trees all undesirable trees 8 inches and larger will be cut in order to promote the growth of oak seedlings. The slash height will be 5 feet. I know that to be aesthetically pleasing the slash height should be lower but it has been my experience that if the tops of trees are left in the 6-8 foot range the amount of regeneration improves greatly. The deer are less apt to browse the young seedlings when the tops are left high. A 5 foot slash height seems to be a adequate compromise. There are no stream or wetland crossings. We will be working around these areas and any tops which fall in these areas will be pulled away from the wetlands. The main skid trails from the previous harvest are still in good shape and we will use those to access the timber. All logging operations will adhere to the CT DEEP Best Management Practices. From 51 acres we plan to harvest 392 trees plus 72 cords of firewood.
