Wood column bases in Building B basement and sub-basement appear to be sound despite contact with concrete. We noted no areas where repairs are required. Wood columns along the north side of the existing elevator shaft appeared to serve as guide rail supports only. These are no longer required and may be removed. Columns that are within the stair shaft will no longer be required in the completed construction. They can be removed once the beams are supported on new construction or shoring. There are a number of existing columns in the North end of the basement which are not shown on the drawings. In general the intent is that these columns be removed. Two of them support either cracked beams or posts supporting damaged beams above. These columns should remain in place or be replaced with shoring until the beams are repaired. Cracked beams we noted in Building B at L2.F at the first floor framing (basement ceiling) near the middle of the east span and at L2.H at the second floor (first floor ceiling) near the middle of the west span. A sketch for repair of these beams will follow. There is some minor insect damage to west ends of beams at L2.D and L2.E where they meet the wall at the first floor (basement ceiling). The remaining wood appears sound. 58 Essex Street, Deep River, CT 06417 860-532-0312
