However, the combustion air for the boiler is currently being drawn from the garage. Per code combustion air for this boiler cannot be taken from the garage. Therefore the vents to the garage must be blocked and air must be drawn from outside of the garage. Please call if you have any questions. During that inspection I noted that the boiler installed in the room in the corner of the garage is not installed in accordance with the Building Code in effect when the Certificate of Occupancy was issued for the structure. (violation notice attached) It appears that the boiler is the original appliance and therefore should be installed in accordance with the 1978 State of Connecticut Basic Building Code. Section 413.1.5 of the 1978 State of Connecticut Basic Building Code requires that boilers or other appliances located in private garages shall have the combustion chamber, ash pit, etc. raised a minimum of eighteen inches above the floor to eliminate a possible source of ignition. The boiler installed at the above referenced address does not meet this requirement. In addition, the boiler is installed in a confined space within the garage and does not meet the combustion air requirements of section 610.3.1 of the 1978 BOCA mechanical section of the State of Connecticut Building Code which states in part: "the confined space shall be provided with two permanent openings, one (1) near the top of the enclosure and one (1) near the bottom. Each opening shall have an unobstructed area of at least(1) square inch per (1000) one thousand BTUs per hour of the total input rating of all appliances in the confined space" If you have any questions you may contact me at the town of Montville Building Department during Regular working hours.
