Depth of , Footing (a ) If = -old house, new chimney and a single flue, woodstove chimney, then 42' is permissable, but not recommended. If you must put footing a minimum of 42" then hose base of excavation before pouring footing, for hydro - static compaction. The more water that you use the more filling of possible 1' voids in the debris the builder may have used to ' , back fill the foundation. It is always best to dig down to the original house footing and start there. 3. As the blocks are mortored in a tie is required every 2 nd converse. Siding must be removed the width of chimney and ties nailed to the original sheathing. 4 . Indicates that when constructed the flue tile must start 18" below the smoke connector. 5. You must have a cleanout below the smoke pipe connector. 6.&7. The minimum pad (footing) should be 3 ' Square X 1 ' thick, however it should extend 1 ' beyond chimney on all three sides. 8. Flue must extend a minimum of 4 " above block and a sloped cap made to seal off rain water from getting between the flue and block. 9.&10 If going up each side the chimney must extend 2 ' above point 10 ' away from roof slope. 11 . Explained in notes on flue lining construction. 3 Outside Fireplace Chimney 12. This is an area that can or might require attention after every year of use. It is also an area that causes more than one fire in the course of a year. The face of the fireplace is put on after the fireplace box and chimney are built. You must be sure that in back of the face ( against the fire box) it is caulked with mortor across • the top and down the sides. Over the years, if the caulking (mortor) falls out it could allow heat and fire to creep up to the nearest header or out to the side wall. 13. Hearth extension (projection into the room) 6 Square feet of opening or less must extend 16" in front and, 8" each side. Six square feet or more shall extend 20" front and 12" each side. 14 . If you can prove that the ground under the footing was never disturbed or back filled the code allows for 42" t'o the bottom of the footing from average grade level. - 15. Indicate the proper location and a Montville requirement to go to the depth of the original house footing. 16. State code calls for a reinforcing bar or tie(see 1008.63) to anchor the chimney to the stud walls at each floor level on intervals of 10 feet. Detail 4 and 5 show typical tieing methods. This is more fully described in one & two Family Dwelling Code, page 76. Figure A-9 State Building Code by reference in AppendixB. (Accredited " -.^r,isv ) __ 1i -c1 -, •r71fied Y12cellanenus. 4 6. C. Where thimble enters wall from outside all combustible material will be trimmed and boxed away from flue, (b) thus j i (a ) indicates chimney showing through into the house — i this cavity can be filled with mortor or concrete As the homeowner, you are ultimately responsible for the safety of yourself and your family. Wood fires can attain flue temperatures of 1 , 000 degrees or better. + This is not a thing to be undertaken lightly. Fireplaces burn down houses every year. Because it was built by a chimney builder doesn' t mean that it was safely built. ff Remember that in Connecticut, chimney builders are not licensed, they do not pass a qualification test. You only have their word to prove they know how. 11 . The State Fire Code requires t' 9 you to build the chimney ;j in a certain (fire safe) 1 prescribed method and it follows; is 1cFPA No. 211 Section 802 states : 1- li I802.
