At our clients request we have inspected the remains of the old
stone mill building at his property on Pequot Road, and are
preparing plans for the buildings renovation and rehabilitation.
Our plans will be utilizing a wood frame structure inside
(bearing on a new monolithic reinforced concrete slab) , and
independent of the existing stone structure. No new or additional
vertical loading will be placed directly on the stone; instead the
stone will be acting strictly as a siding system. Existing wood
window and door headers shall be replaced with either solid stone
headers of equal size or steel mortared in place. The existing
wood header over the left front door shall be retained, and backed
up by a new steel header. The structure will be pointed so that
there are no loose joints or stone members, and the top shall have
stones removed and mortared level . The new roof truss system will
be bearing on the new construction and tied to the stone structure
at the top for stability.
These measures will allow the project to retain the rustic
character of the area, and provide a safe and cost effective
alternative to demolition and reconstruction.
I have retained Ilmar J. Filhaber, P.E . to review the stability
of the existing structure, and the proposed details for it' s
renovation.

the masonry work to proceed while the final plans are being
