IMPORTANT: BEFORE INSTALLING MANUFACTURER SPECIFIC PRODUCTS, REFER TO THE MANUFACTURER' S INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS . • CONSUMER INFORMATION SHEET FOR ACQ PRESERVED WOOD ACQ PRESERVED WOOD ALSO KNOWN AS ALKALINE COPPER QUATERNARY COMPOUNDS IS A NEW PRODUCT BEING OFFERED AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO TRADITIONAL PRESSURE TREATED WOOD. ACQ PRODUCTS PROVIDE CONSUMERS AN OPTION IN THEIR SELECTION OF PRESERVED WOOD PRODUCTS . THE PRESERVATIVE TECHNOLOGY IN ACQ PRODUCTS HAS BEEN USED COMMERCIALLY SINCE 1991 THROUGHOUT EUROPE, ASIA AND THE UNITED STATES. FOR MANY BACKYARD AND COMMERCIAL PROJECTS, ACQ PRODUCTS ARE AN IDEAL ALTERNATIVE TO TRADITIONAL PRESSURE TREATED WOOD. HERE' S WHY: • ACQ PRESERVED WOOD PRODUCTS ARE DURABLE AND DESIGNED FOR OUTDOOR CONSTRUCTION. • THE PRESERVATIVE IS COPPER-BASED WITH A CO-BIOCIDE, ALSO KNOWN AS ALKALINE COPPER QUATERNARY COMPOUNDS (ACQ) . • ACQ-TREATED WOOD PRODUCTS ARE THE MOST WIDELY USED ALTERNATIVE TO TRADITIONAL PRESSURE TREATED WOOD IN NORTH AMERICA • ACQ PRODUCTS ARE IDEAL FOR OUTDOOR FURNITURE, DECKS, LANDSCAPING, GAZEBOS, FENCES, PATIOS, WALKWAYS, BOARDWALKS AND DOCKS . THE MAIN ACTIVE INGREDIENT IN ACQ IS COPPER. COPPER HAS LONG BEEN KNOWN AS AN EFFECTIVE WOOD PRESERVATIVE. IN ACQ, IT IS COUPLED WITH A QUATERNARY COMPOUND OR "QUAT" FOR ENHANCED PERFORMANCE AGAINST COPPER-TOLERANT FUNGI AND TERMITES. QUATS ARE COMMONLY USED IN HOUSEHOLD DISINFECTANTS AND CLEANERS. HANDLING, CONSTRUCTION TECHNIQUES AND THE GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF ACQ WOOD PRODUCTS ARE SIMILAR TO THOSE OF TRADITIONAL TREATED WOOD. MOST IMPORTANT, ACQ PRODUCTS HAVE PROVEN AROUND THE WORLD TO REDUCE DEMANDS ON FOREST RESOURCES BY GREATLY EXTENDING THE LIFE OF WOOD. IMPORTANT APPLICATION INFORMATION • USE AN END-CUT PRESERVATIVE v WHEN BUILDING YOUR OUTDOOR PROJECT WITH ACQ PRESERVED WOOD, IT IS IMPORTANT TO PROTECT THE CUT ENDS OF BOARDS FROM FUNGAL DECAY. ALL CUTS AND HOLES THAT EXPOSE UNTREATED WOOD SHOULD BE LIBERALLY BRUSH-COATED WITH AN END-CUT PRESERVATIVE (COPPER NAPHTHENATE IN GROUND CONTACT OR ZINC NAPHTHENATE ABOVE GROUND) BEFORE THE WOOD IS INSTALLED. ALSO APPLY ON AREAS WHERE MOISTURE CAN COLLECT. ALWAYS FOLLOW THE MANUFACTURER' S RECOMMENDATIONS . • USE CORROSION-RESISTANT FASTENERS v ACQ PRESERVED WOOD PRODUCTS ARE DESIGNED FOR LONG-TERM PERFORMANCE IN OUTDOOR APPLICATIONS AND, THEREFORE, REQUIRE HIGH QUALITY, CORROSION-RESISTANT NAILS, SCREWS AND OTHER FASTENERS. FOR BEST RESULTS, FASTENERS SHOULD BE STAINLESS STEEL, HOT-DIP GALVANIZED OR OTHER FASTENERS THAT HAVE PERFORMED WELL IN APPROPRIATE TESTING WITH COPPER-BASED PRESERVATIVE TREATED WOOD. • DIRECT CONTACT OF ACQ PRESERVED WOOD WITH ALUMINUM IS NOT RECOMMENDED AND SHOULD BE AVOIDED v WHEN USING ACQ PRESERVED WOOD IN CLOSE PROXIMITY TO ALUMINUM PRODUCTS, SUCH AS ALUMINUM SIDING, FLASHING, AND DOOR AND WINDOW FRAMES, A 1/4" MINIMUM SPACE MUST BE ALLOWED FOR BETWEEN THE ACQ AND THE ALUMINUM PRODUCTS. POLYETHYLENE OR NYLON SPACERS CAN BE USED TO MAINTAIN THE 1/4" SPACING. ANOTHER OPTION IS TO USE A POLYETHYLENE BARRIER, WITH A MINIMUM THICKNESS OF 10 MILS, BETWEEN THE ACQ PRESERVED WOOD AND THE ALUMINUM PRODUCT TO PREVENT DIRECT CONTACT OF THE WOOD AND THE ALUMINUM. • DRILL PILOT HOLES TO MINIMIZE SPLITTING, ESPECIALLY WHEN NAILING OR 'SCREWING NEAR THE EDGE OR END OF A BOARD. • SPACE DECK BOARDS APPROPRIATELY v IF THE WOOD FEELS DRY, ALLOW 1/8" SPACING BETWEEN BOARDS FOR DRAINAGE AND VENTILATION. SHOULD THE WOOD FEEL WET DURING CONSTRUCTION, SPACE DECK BOARDS CLOSER TOGETHER TO ALLOW FOR SHRINKAGE AS DRYING OCCURS. • APPLY A WEATHER-RESISTANT FINISH v ANY EXPOSED WOOD, R.RESSURE TREATED OR NOT, SHOULD BE PROTECTED FROM THE WEATHER. APPLICATION OF A QUALITY CLEAR WATER REPELLENT OR SEMI-TRANSPARENT STAIN WHICH CONTAINS WATER REPELLENT WILL HELP MINIMIZE THE CYCLES OF MOISTURE TAKE-UP AND LOSS THE WOOD GOES THROUGH OUTDOORS. IF YOUR ACQ PRESERVED WOOD HAS NOT BEEN PRESSURE TREATED WITH A FACTORY APPLIED WATER REPELLENT, APPLY A CLEAR WATER REPELLENT WHEN THE WOOD IS SURFACE DRY OR WAIT APPROXIMATELY 60 DAYS BEFORE APPLYING A SEMI-TRANSPARENT STAIN. IF THE ACQ PRODUCTS CONTAIN A FACTORY WATER REPELLENT, AN OIL-BASED STAIN CAN BE APPLIED IN 30-60 DAYS AND WATER-BASED STAINS CAN BE APPLIED AFTER 6 MONTHS. ALWAYS CHECK THAT THE WOOD IS SURFACE DRY BEFORE APPLYING STAIN. IN ALL INSTANCES FOLLOW THE MANUFACTURER' S DIRECTIONS WHEN APPLYING WATER REPELLENTS OR SEMI-TRANSPARENT STAINS WHICH MAY CONTAIN WATER REPELLENT. THE PRESERVATIVES IN ACQ PRODUCTS ARE FREQUENTLY USED IN PRODUCTS THAT ARE COMMON IN OUR EVERYDAY LIVES. COPPER, A NATURALLY OCCURRING MINERAL, IS AN EFFECTIVE AND WIDELY USED FUNGICIDE, AND QUATERNARY COMPOUNDS ARE COMMONLY USED IN HOUSEHOLD DISINFECTANTS AND CLEANERS. THE PRESERVATIVES IN ACQ PRODUCTS PENETRATE INTO AND WILL REMAIN IN THE WOOD FOR A LONG PERIOD OF TIME. HOWEVER, SOME PRESERVATIVE MAY MIGRATE FROM THE PRESERVED WOOD INTO SURROUNDING SOIL OVER TIME AND THERE MAY ALSO BE INCIDENTAL CONTACT WITH THE SKIN DURING CONSTRUCTION OR USE. HANDLING AND USE RECOMMENDATIONS • DO NOT BURN PRESERVED WOOD (SEE DISPOSAL BELOW) . • WEAR A DUST MASK AND GOGGLES WHEN CUTTING OR HANDLING WOOD. • WEAR GLOVES WHEN WORKING WITH WOOD. • ALL SAWDUST AND CONSTRUCTION DEBRIS SHOULD BE CLEANED UP AND DISPOSED OF AFTER CONSTRUCTION. • AFTER WORKING WITH THE WOOD, WASH EXPOSED AREAS THOROUGHLY. • WASH WORK CLOTHES SEPARATELY FROM OTHER HOUSEHOLD CLOTHING BEFORE REUSE. • PRESERVED WOOD SHOULD NOT BE USED WHERE IT MAY COME INTO DIRECT OR INDIRECT CONTACT WITH DRINKING WATER, EXCEPT FOR USES INVOLVING INCIDENTAL CONTACT SUCH AS FRESH WATER DOCKS AND BRIDGES . • DO NOT USE PRESERVED WOOD UNDER CIRCUMSTANCES WHERE THE PRESERVATIVE MAY BECOME A COMPONENT OF FOOD, ANIMAL FEED OR BEEHIVES. • DO NOT USE PRESERVED WOOD FOR MULCH. • ONLY PRESERVED WOOD THAT IS VISIBLY CLEAN AND FREE OF SURFACE RESIDUE SHOULD BE USED FOR PATIOS, DECKS AND WALKWAYS. DISPOSAL RECOMMENDATIONS • PRESERVED WOOD MAY BE DISPOSED OF IN LANDFILLS OR BURNED IN COMMERCIAL OR INDUSTRIAL INCINERATORS OR BOILERS IN ACCORDANCE WITH PROVINCIAL AND FEDERAL REGULATIONS.
